About
Cannatonic was bred by Resin Seeds in Barcelona, Spain, and released in 2008 as the first major commercial CBD-dominant cannabis strain. The cross, per updated Resin Seeds information, is Reina Madre crossed with NYC Diesel (NYCD), though earlier releases of the strain carried different publicly-stated lineages. The strain took third place in the Sativa category at the 2008 High Times Cannabis Cup, and later won first place for CBD Flower at the 2013 High Times Cannabis Cup Amsterdam. Cannatonic is structurally different from most strains in our database because of its cannabinoid profile rather than its terpenes. Roughly 75 percent of Cannatonic seed phenotypes express as CBD-dominant, with about half showing a near-1:1 CBD-to-THC ratio and another quarter showing high-CBD-low-THC expression. That genetic CBD bias is why Resin Seeds claims 80 percent or more of American, Swiss, and Italian hemp varieties trace back through Cannatonic lineage, and it's also why the strain became foundational to the commercial CBD market that emerged in the mid-2010s. The terpene data in our database shows myrcene leading at 0.73%, with much smaller concentrations across the rest of the profile. Limonene, bisabolol, caryophyllene, pinene, and ocimene all sit under 0.10%. That low-variance terpene spread is typical of CBD-forward strains, which are often bred for cannabinoid expression rather than aromatic complexity. The cannabinoid data reflects Cannatonic's CBD-dominant identity. THC ranges between 1 and 6% across the lab samples in our records, with CBD ranging between 6 and 17%. That is an inverted ratio compared to most commercial cannabis strains, which is exactly what a CBD-forward strain looks like in testing. Consumers looking for a calming, low-psychoactivity experience tend to gravitate here for that reason. Our database chemotype classification is "Blue (Myrcene-dominant)". Reviewers describe the effects as focused first, then relaxed and sleepy, with uplifted as a secondary characteristic, a calming profile consistent with CBD-forward genetics.
Why does Cannatonic feel relaxing?
Cannatonic's relaxing yet uplifting effects are associated with its high myrcene content (0.73%), which has sedative properties, balanced by limonene (0.09%), known for mood elevation.
