Fresh pine-scented terpene found in pine needles, rosemary, and basil.
Fresh, sharp pine. Like walking through a conifer forest
Alpha-pinene is the most widely encountered terpenoid in nature and one of the most important terpenes in cannabis. It is a bicyclic monoterpene (C₁₀H₁₆) that exists in two isomeric forms: α-pinene and β-pinene, both found in pine resin, rosemary, basil, sage, and many other aromatic plants.
Research indicates that α-pinene has anti-inflammatory properties and may support memory retention by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase, an enzyme that breaks down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. It also acts as a bronchodilator, opening airways in the lungs, which has made it a traditional remedy for respiratory conditions. Pinene may help counteract some of the short-term memory impairment associated with THC.
In cannabis, pinene-dominant strains tend to produce alert, focused effects rather than sedation. This makes them popular choices for daytime use, creative activities, and situations where mental clarity is valued. Pinene is also used as a chiral starting material in pharmaceutical synthesis, including work on the anti-cancer compound taxol.
