About
Runtz was born in Los Angeles in late 2016 or early 2017, the product of a three-person crew: Ray Bama on strategy, an anonymous head grower known as Nick who did the actual breeding, and rapper Yung LB handling marketing. The cross was Zkittlez and Gelato, specifically Gelato #33 sourced through Cookies Family connections. At the time, indoor-grown Zkittlez was extremely rare and Gelato was at peak market hype, so the idea was to combine the two hottest strains of the moment. The cross produced two standout phenotypes, #3 and #7, which became the foundation of every subsequent Runtz cut. The name is a wordplay on Nestle's Runts candy from the 1980s, with the "s" swapped to a "z" to match the Zkittlez spelling. The launch happened at the 2017 Emerald Cup, where the crew reportedly sold five pounds of flower in under ten minutes. The terpene data in our database backs up the hype reputation. Myrcene leads at 1.11%, which is among the highest concentrations we record, with caryophyllene at 0.36% and pinene at 0.26% in supporting roles. That high myrcene content explains the fruity, candy-forward aroma Runtz is famous for, since myrcene contributes sweet, almost ripe-fruit notes when it sits at high concentrations. The 0.13% limonene adds a citrus edge that keeps the sweetness bright rather than flat. Our database classifies Runtz as indica and chemotype "Blue (Myrcene-dominant)". THC ranges from 20.3 to 27.4%, which is on the high end of commercial hybrid potency. Reviewers in our data describe the effects as relaxed and euphoric as a tied top pair, with creative in third place, a profile that matches the strain's reputation as a social, functional hybrid rather than a heavy couch-lock indica despite its indica classification.
Why does Runtz have these effects?
Runtz's effects are driven by its dominant myrcene (1.11%), which has sedative and muscle-relaxant properties, combined with caryophyllene (0.39%), one of the few terpenes that binds directly to CB2 cannabinoid receptors.
