About

Zkittlez emerged from Northern California's craft-breeding scene in the early 2010s, the product of a collaboration between 3rd Gen Family Farm and Terp Hogz Genetics. A cut of an indica hybrid was originally given to a breeder named Brandon Parker at 3rd Gen Family, who worked with Fields and Tony Mendo of Terp Hogz to grow, stabilize, and enter it into contests. The strain reached wider cannabis awareness around 2015, which is when it began showing up consistently in dispensary menus outside of Northern California. The lineage is Grape Ape crossed with Grapefruit, with a third undisclosed parent in the mix that the breeders have declined to name publicly. The name is a direct reference to Skittles candy, spelled with a "Z" to avoid trademark issues with the Mars corporation. The strain won first place in the indica category at both the 2015 High Times Cannabis Cups in San Francisco and Michigan, and then took the 2016 Emerald Cup as well. The terpene profile is modest but well-distributed across the top positions. Myrcene leads at 0.30%, with limonene close behind at 0.21%, and caryophyllene at 0.13%. That combination of myrcene and limonene in near-equal positions is responsible for the strain's signature sweet-fruit aroma, which consumers often describe as literally candy-like. Linalool at 0.11% contributes a floral softness that rounds out the profile. Our database chemotype classification is "Blue (Myrcene-dominant)", with THC ranging between 14.2 and 19.2% across the lab samples we have. That THC range is on the lower end for a modern popular strain, which is consistent with Zkittlez's reputation as a flavor-forward rather than potency-forward cultivar. Flavor tags in our records include berry, citrus, tropical, and sweet, which is about as faithful to the strain name as you'll get from terpene data alone.

Why does Zkittlez feel relaxing?

Zkittlez's relaxing yet uplifting effects are associated with its high myrcene content (0.30%), which has sedative properties, balanced by limonene (0.21%), known for mood elevation.
