GG4
by GG Strains (Joesy Whales, Lone Watie) · Gorilla Glue #4
About
Gorilla Glue #4 was bred by GG Strains of Las Vegas, Nevada, specifically by breeders operating as Joesy Whales and Lone Watie. The cross is Chem's Sister (a direct descendant of the original 1991 Chemdawg seed plantings) crossed with Chocolate Diesel and Sour Dubb. The origin story is an accident: Joesy Whales attempted the cross around 2009, failed the first time, gave away some unwanted seeds from the failed project, and succeeded on a second attempt from those discarded seeds. Three usable females emerged, designated GG1, GG2, and GG4. The fourth phenotype became the commercial standard. The strain is now officially called "Original Glue" rather than Gorilla Glue #4, as a result of a 2017 trademark dispute with the Gorilla Glue Company. The adhesive manufacturer sued for trademark infringement, and GG Strains settled out of court on condition of renaming the line. In dispensary menus and informal conversation the GG4 name is still dominant, which is why our database tracks the strain under that slug. The terpene profile in our database shows caryophyllene leading at 0.41%, with beta-pinene at 0.30% and limonene at 0.25% in supporting positions. Myrcene at 0.22% and humulene at 0.14% round out the top five. That relatively flat distribution across five terpenes is consistent with GG4's reputation for a complex, layered aroma rather than a single-note character. Our database chemotype classification is "Purple (Caryophyllene-dominant)", consistent with the indica-leaning hybrid classification. THC ranges between 19 and 25.7% across the lab samples, which is high and tracks with GG4's commercial reputation as a potent strain. The strain won Best Hybrid Flower at the 2015 World Cannabis Cup and took 2nd place for Best Hybrid Flower at the 2016 Colorado Cannabis Cup. The effects record is blank in our database, which is a data gap worth noting given the strain's well-documented reputation for strong, relaxing effects.
Why does GG4 have these effects?
GG4's effects are associated with its high caryophyllene content (0.41%), one of the few terpenes that binds directly to CB2 cannabinoid receptors.
