About
Grape Ape was bred by Apothecary Genetics, a California breeder collective founded by Bret Bogue in 2004, with additional input from Barney's Farm. The cross combines three parents: Mendocino Purps, Skunk, and Afghani, producing an indica-dominant strain that landed in commercial circulation in the mid-2000s. The Mendocino Purps parent is where the distinctive grape-candy aroma and purple coloration come from, while the Skunk and Afghani contributions add body structure and aromatic depth. The strain's competition record is strong for its era: first place at both Green Cup 2005 and 2006, and first place in the Concentrate category at the 2011 High Times Medical Cup. Grape Ape has since become a lineage staple in modern breeding, showing up as a parent in crosses including Grape Head, Purple Urkle variants, and several purple-dominant hybrids from the 2010s. The terpene profile is heavy on caryophyllene. Caryophyllene leads at a very high 0.98%, with limonene at 0.39% and humulene at 0.34%. That three-terpene top tier accounts for over 1.7% of the flower's weight, putting Grape Ape in the dense-aromatic category typical of competition-grade indicas. The high humulene is worth noting since humulene usually sits as a trace terpene; at 0.34% it contributes a definite earthy-hoppy note that balances out the sweet grape character that dominates on first impression. Our database chemotype classification is "Purple (Caryophyllene-dominant)", consistent with the indica-leaning aromatic profile. THC ranges between 18.0 and 24.4% across the lab samples in our database, moderate-to-high by modern standards. Reviewers describe the effects as focused first, then hungry and relaxed tied, with sleepy following. That arc reads as a full evening-indica sequence, running from onset engagement through appetite and body relaxation to eventual sedation.
Why does Grape Ape feel pain-relieving?
Grape Ape's pain-relieving effects are linked to its dominant caryophyllene (0.98%), one of the few terpenes that binds directly to CB2 cannabinoid receptors. Complemented by limonene (0.39%), known for mood elevation and stress relief.
