About
Chemdawg has one of the most culturally specific origin stories in American cannabis. The strain was discovered in June 1991 at a Grateful Dead show in Deer Creek, Indiana, when a person nicknamed "Chemdog" bought cannabis at the parking lot mini-festival known as Shakedown Street. The weed, originally called "Dog Bud" because it reportedly knocked smokers over "like a dog," came from a friend of a friend's Colorado grower. After the shows, Chemdog arranged for more, and the ounces that arrived contained 13 seeds at the bottom of one bag. Of those 13 seeds, Chemdog planted four. Three of them turned out to be female, and became the maternal plants named Chemdog '91, Chem's Sister, and Chem B. Those three clones became the genetic foundation of an enormous lineage of later strains, including NYC Diesel, Chem Haze, Super Snowdog, and both OG Kush and Sour Diesel. Chemdawg is effectively a building block of the modern American cannabis gene pool. The terpene data in our database shows caryophyllene leading at a high 1.02%, with myrcene at 0.68% and humulene at 0.35%. That top-three concentration accounts for over two percent of the flower's weight, which is high by commercial standards. The aromatic profile is dominated by the fuel-earth character that gives Chemdawg its reputation, with the flavor tags in our records listing diesel and pine as the primary notes. Our database chemotype classification is "Purple (Caryophyllene-dominant)", despite the strain's hybrid classification and sativa-leaning reputation. THC ranges between 15.6 and 21.1% across the lab samples, moderate by modern standards. The effects record is incomplete in our database, so we don't have a full reviewer-consensus profile to report here. Consumers looking for effect information should reference external sources for Chemdawg given the data gap.
Why does Chemdawg feel pain-relieving?
Chemdawg's pain-relieving effects are linked to its dominant caryophyllene (1.02%), one of the few terpenes that binds directly to CB2 cannabinoid receptors. Complemented by myrcene (0.68%), which has sedative and muscle-relaxant properties.
