About

AK-47 is one of Serious Seeds' long-running hybrid releases, in their catalog since the early 1990s, and three decades later it remains an example for Dutch hybrid breeding. It has placed in multiple seed-bank competitions over the years, which is part of why you still see the strain in catalogs and grow literature today. The terpene profile is the most distinctive thing about AK-47. Humulene sits at 1.20%, the dominant terpene. This is unusual as most well-known strains lean myrcene or caryophyllene dominant, so a humulene-led cannabis plant has a recognizably different aromatic signature: earthy, hop-like, closer to dried herbs than to the fruit or fuel notes you'd find in OG or Gelato lineages. Caryophyllene shows up as the second-most-present terpene at 0.59%. Both humulene and caryophyllene are also found in black pepper and hops, which is where the "spicy earth" tasting notes come from, and why some people swear the jar smells a bit like opening an IPA. THC ranges in the 13.7 to 18.5% window across the lab samples in our database. By 2026 hybrid standards that is moderate rather than heavy, which tracks with AK-47's historical reputation as a sociable strain rather than a couch-lock one. The chemotype classification is "Red (Mixed)", indicating a balanced cannabinoid expression rather than a strict THC-dominant phenotype. Genetic paperwork from Serious Seeds lists AK-47's parent lineage as an earlier AK47 line crossed with an unknown ruderalis. "Unknown ruderalis" in breeder notes is usually shorthand for "someone forgot the actual name between the grow room and the catalog," which was pretty standard practice in early 90s hybridization where ruderalis crosses were being brought in to stabilize flowering cycles. Our lineage records show AK-47 has gone on to parent dozens of second-generation crosses, which is part of why AK47 appears repeatedly across the broader strain database.

Why does AK-47 have these effects?

AK-47's effects are driven by its dominant humulene (1.20%), associated with appetite suppression and anti-inflammatory effects, combined with caryophyllene (0.59%), one of the few terpenes that binds directly to CB2 cannabinoid receptors.
