Aromatic compounds found in cannabis and other plants that influence flavor, scent, and potentially the effects of a strain.
Terpenes are aromatic organic compounds produced by cannabis and thousands of other plants, fruits, and herbs. In cannabis, they are responsible for the distinctive scents and flavors that distinguish one strain from another, from the citrus burst of Lemon Haze to the earthy musk of OG Kush.
Cannabis produces terpenes in the same trichome glands that manufacture cannabinoids. Over 200 different terpenes have been identified in cannabis, though most strains are dominated by just a handful. These compounds originally evolved as a defense mechanism, repelling pests and attracting pollinators. In the human body, terpenes interact with neurotransmitter receptors and can cross the blood-brain barrier, which is why different strains can produce noticeably different moods and physical sensations.
Researchers believe terpenes do more than just smell good. The entourage effect theory suggests that terpenes work synergistically with cannabinoids like THC and CBD to shape the overall cannabis experience. For example, myrcene may enhance THC absorption, while limonene may contribute to mood elevation. This is why two strains with the same THC percentage can feel very different. Reading terpene profiles on lab reports is one of the best ways to predict how a strain will affect you.
