Full spectrum refers to a cannabis extract that retains the complete range of naturally occurring compounds found in the plant, including multiple cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, and trace amounts of THC. This stands in contrast to isolate products, which contain only a single purified cannabinoid.
The value of full-spectrum products is rooted in the entourage effect, the theory that cannabis compounds work together synergistically for enhanced benefits. A full-spectrum CBD oil, for example, contains not just CBD but also trace THC, CBG, CBN, and a range of terpenes that may improve absorption and effectiveness. Clinical research has suggested that full-spectrum extracts can be effective at lower doses than pure isolates, potentially offering better value and fewer side effects.
When shopping for full-spectrum products, always check the certificate of analysis (COA) from a third-party lab. This report will show the exact cannabinoid and terpene content, confirming that the product truly contains a range of compounds. Note that full-spectrum products containing THC, even in trace amounts below 0.3%, may show up on drug tests. If this is a concern, broad-spectrum products offer a middle ground by removing THC while retaining other beneficial compounds.
