An isolate is a cannabis extract that has been refined to contain a single cannabinoid in its purest form, typically achieving 99% or higher purity. CBD isolate is the most common variety, appearing as a fine white crystalline powder with no taste, odor, or color. THC isolate also exists but is less commonly sold as a standalone product.
The production process begins with a crude cannabis extract, which then undergoes multiple refinement steps. Winterization removes waxes and lipids. Distillation separates cannabinoids from terpenes and other compounds. Finally, chromatography or crystallization isolates the target cannabinoid to near-complete purity. The result is a product stripped of all terpenes, flavonoids, and other cannabinoids, leaving only the single compound.
Isolates offer precise dosing and zero THC, making them appealing for drug-tested individuals and those who want cannabinoid supplementation without any risk of psychoactive effects. However, research suggests that isolates may be less effective than full-spectrum extracts due to the absence of the entourage effect. A notable study from the Lautenberg Center for Immunology found that full-spectrum CBD required lower doses to achieve anti-inflammatory effects compared to CBD isolate. Isolates work best when precise, single-compound dosing is the priority.
