Mid-grade cannabis typically has moderate THC content (12% to 18%), a less developed terpene profile producing a milder aroma, lighter green color, visible stems and seeds (in lower-quality mids), and effects that are present but not particularly memorable. The flower may be decently grown but not optimized for maximum trichome production, or it may be a lower-quality harvest from a production facility prioritizing quantity over quality. Mids are functional but lack the wow factor of premium flower.

In the era before widespread legalization, mids were often the standard available cannabis for many consumers. They represented a step up from schwag but remained affordable for regular use. Today, as dispensary shelves fill with premium options, mid has become a disparaging term. Calling someone's cannabis mid is an insult to the grower's quality. The term's crossover into general slang (mid take, mid movie, mid outfit) shows how cannabis culture continues to influence broader language and cultural expression.
