Truly dank cannabis is identifiable by several characteristics: an overwhelmingly strong aroma that fills a room when the container is opened, dense and sticky bud structure covered in visible trichomes, vibrant colors, and a complex flavor profile that lingers on the palate. The pungency comes from a high concentration of terpenes, particularly myrcene, caryophyllene, and limonene. Dank flower also tends to be well-cured, with the right moisture content that makes buds slightly sticky rather than dry and crumbly.

Originally used primarily in North American cannabis communities, dank has spread globally through internet culture and hip-hop.
