A hand-rolled cannabis cigarette using rolling paper, one of the most classic and widely recognized consumption methods.
A joint is a hand-rolled cannabis cigarette made with thin rolling paper, and it is arguably the most iconic method of cannabis consumption in the world. Joints have been part of cannabis culture for over a century, offering a simple, portable, and communal way to enjoy flower.
A standard joint consists of ground cannabis flower wrapped in rolling paper, typically with a crutch (also called a filter or tip) at one end to provide structure and prevent inhaling loose material. Rolling papers come in various materials including rice, hemp, and wood pulp, each affecting the burn rate and flavor. King-size papers accommodate roughly 1 gram of flower, while single-wide papers hold about 0.5 grams. Cone-shaped joints, wider at the tip and narrower at the crutch, are a popular style that allows even burning.
Grind your flower to a medium consistency, not too fine or too coarse, for even airflow and burning. Pack the joint firmly enough to prevent air pockets but loosely enough to draw air through. Seal the paper with a gentle lick along the gum line. Light the tip evenly by rotating the joint while applying flame, rather than inhaling while lighting. A well-rolled joint burns slowly and evenly from tip to crutch, delivering consistent flavor and smoke throughout the session.
