A rolled cigarette containing a mix of cannabis and tobacco, popular in Europe as an alternative to pure cannabis joints.
A spliff is a rolled cigarette containing a mixture of cannabis and tobacco, wrapped in standard rolling paper. Spliffs are the norm in much of Europe, particularly in the Netherlands, Spain, and the UK, where mixing cannabis with tobacco has been the traditional consumption method for decades.
The ratio of cannabis to tobacco in a spliff varies by personal preference and cultural norm. European spliffs often contain 30% to 50% cannabis with the remainder being tobacco, while North American users who roll spliffs tend to use a higher cannabis ratio. The tobacco serves several functions: it improves the burn consistency, makes the cannabis supply last longer, adds the stimulant effects of nicotine, and produces a head rush that some consumers enjoy as part of the experience.
The combined effects of cannabis and tobacco create a unique experience that differs from consuming either substance alone. Nicotine provides a brief stimulant effect that can enhance the initial rush, while cannabis provides the longer-lasting relaxation. However, the health risks of tobacco inhalation are well-documented, and mixing the two substances can increase nicotine dependence. Many consumers are transitioning away from spliffs in favor of pure joints, particularly as awareness of tobacco's health impact grows and high-quality cannabis becomes more accessible.
