How to Vape Hash Using the Universal Baller and Torch Vape Adapter

A HyperDyn tip with no cap, dropped into the Universal Baller torch vape adapter at 626°F (330°C), loaded with traditional hash pressed thin on the walls of the tip. How I load it, why the hash goes on the sides and not the screen, Cotton Bacon or not, how to keep the tip from getting stuck, and cleanup.

There is no other setup that vapes traditional hash like this. I kind of wrote the torch vape adapter off when I first got it: cool, you use it once, you never use it again. Then I loaded a HyperDyn with hash and dropped it in.

The adapter comes in the Universal Baller adaptor kit, and it takes a torch vape like a DynaVap or a Solo stem. The kit review covers the vape itself. This one is all about hash.

The setup

  • HyperDyn tip, no cap
  • Ed's TNT wooden Blue Mahoe water pipe adapter as the stem
  • Universal Baller with the ruby insert in, set to 626°F (330°C)
  • Round one through the Cactus Cooling Whip dry pipe, round two through a cheap J hook
  • Grade four traditional hash

Leave the cap off. With the torch adapter it doesn't work well with the cap on, you want the tip bare and open. Line the hole up, slide it in, and the torch vape turns into a convection hit. The wooden water pipe adapter has its own video if you want a closer look at it.

Whichever torch vape you put in there changes the experience a lot. With dry herb I like it better with a smaller bowl, the way it hits is more forgiving.

I run it with the ruby insert in, and I have pretty much since I got the insert. I haven't gone back to the 1000 rubies.

Hold on to it or it gets stuck

Metal expands when it heats up. The tip fits snug in the adapter, and if you just let it sit there it can lock in.

Ask me how I know. The day I filmed this I finally got on the exercise bike, then figured I'd stretch and do some yoga, then figured a blaze would make the yoga more fun. I got obliterated, the HyperDyn got stuck in the adapter, and I had to knock it free. Keep a hand on it the whole time so you can pull it off.

Loading the hash

  • Pick off a small piece and squish it between your fingers until it is thin, pretty much a disc. Thin is the most important part, it vaporizes more evenly.
  • Break it into a couple of pieces and press them against the walls of the tip. The bottom of a dab tool works great for this.
  • Wipe the dab tool against the sides so you are not leaving a blob of hash on it.
  • Wipe the lip of the tip clean. Any hash on the edge that touches the heater will combust, and you don't want that.

Why the walls and not the screen: as the hash melts, a lot more of it seeps through the screen when it sits right on top of it. Pressed on the sides, it gets more time to vaporize before it starts pulling through.

Cotton Bacon or not

I've vaped hash on a Cotton Bacon base layer before, and it makes cleanup a lot easier. Less oil drips down into the stem and into your piece.

The catch is airflow. The water pipe adapter and the HyperDyn tip don't give you a lot of it to start with, and a normal layer of Cotton Bacon on top makes it way too restrictive. So it is a judgment call.

If you use it, take a tiny corner, almost nothing, and spread it flat on the screen. It is not there to stop every bit of hash from getting through. It gives the hash something to soak into when it liquefies on the way to becoming vapor. Skip it and you get way more open airflow, plus a bit more cleanup. I skipped it in the video.

Puff, wait, slow pull

Hold the tip in the adapter and give it one puff. Wait a second or two. Then a slow pull. A load gets you two or three hits, and don't let it cool down too much between them.

The first hit is not that impressive. The second one, buckle up. Terpene city, your lips are going to taste delicious, and I barely used any hash.

You can go back in for another one after that and you will get a hit. By then the hash is really hot, you're past the top end and moving into the smoke byproducts, so I call it there. My vape temp chart shows what comes off at what temperature. It is built for dry herb, so treat it as a guide here: hash is a concentrate and wants different temps, and a setup like this one that heats by convection changes the numbers too.

Cleanup

Hit it with a Q-tip right away, almost like after a dab. How much is left depends on the hash. Five or six star, barely anything, one Q-tip and you're good. Grade four like this, a little cleanup. Grade three and below, a lot.

Without Cotton Bacon in there the hash liquefies and leaks through the screen, so the tip clogs way faster than it would with flower. It is a concentrate, a lot more resin passes through. My tip was brand new clean before this session and the underside was dirty after one bowl. Whether you run iso after every bowl is your call. I wouldn't.

Round two: Cactus Cooling Whip or J hook

For the second load I switched to a J hook. The one I wanted was from High Artisan, it doesn't clog and it feels great in your hand, but I couldn't find it. The cheap one I used has beads inside, and with all the oil that passes through when you vape hash, it clogs up.

The J hook also gets hot. Not burn-yourself hot, more like switch-hands hot, although I did manage to burn myself anyway. The experience is easier in the Cactus Cooling Whip. I still like the J hook for the little puffs, it feels like I'm about to solve a case, Sherlock Holmes style.

The song over round two is Can You Say Terpene, which I had just finished.

The rest of the adaptor kit

If you already have a Universal Baller, the adaptor kit is a no brainer, you get so many fun experiences out of it. There's the torch vape adapter from this video, two injector adapters for 14mm and 18mm rigs, and the titanium metal jacket, which is ridiculous with the Crossing Tech titanium microdose bowl. That one has its own video.

There's also an adapter that lets you watch the vapor form through the glass. I'm not sold on that one, but it's cool that it's there. For the other way I run hash in this vape, insert out, here's that session.

The art at the start

The video opens with some of my art: woodcut art joints, resin pieces, dab rigs and LED bombs. More of it lives at cantstopart.com, and I do commissioned pieces as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you vape traditional hash in a torch vape adapter?
Squish a small piece of hash thin between your fingers, press it against the walls of the tip with a dab tool, and wipe the lip clean. Put the tip in the adapter with no cap, give it one puff, wait a second or two, then take a slow pull. You get two or three hits a load.
What temperature do you vape hash at in the Universal Baller?
626F (330C) with the ruby insert in, using the torch vape adapter and a HyperDyn tip. That is what works on this combination, not a universal number for every setup.
Why press hash on the sides of the tip instead of the screen?
Hash melts before it turns to vapor. Sitting on the screen, more of it seeps through. Pressed on the walls, it has more time to vaporize before it starts pulling through.
Should you use Cotton Bacon for hash in a torch vape adapter?
It is a judgment call. Cotton Bacon makes cleanup easier and keeps oil out of the stem, but this setup is already tight on airflow. If you use it, keep it to a tiny piece spread flat on the screen, or skip it and accept a bit more cleanup.
Can a DynaVap tip get stuck in the torch vape adapter?
Yes. The metal expands as it heats up, and if you let the tip sit in the adapter it can lock in. Keep a hand on it the whole time so you can pull it off.
