A concentrated cannabis product made by compressing trichomes separated from the plant into a solid block or ball.
Hash, short for hashish, is one of the oldest cannabis preparations in human history, with evidence of its use dating back over 1,000 years in regions spanning from Morocco to Afghanistan and India. It is made by separating trichomes from cannabis plant material and compressing them into a solid block, ball, or cake.
Traditional hash-making methods vary by region. Moroccan hash is made by dry sifting dried cannabis through fine mesh screens and pressing the collected kief. Afghan and Pakistani hash is hand-rolled from fresh plants, producing dark, pliable charas. Modern methods include ice water extraction (bubble hash) and mechanical sifting with tumbling machines. The quality of hash depends on the purity of the trichome collection: higher-grade hash contains more trichome heads and fewer plant contaminants, resulting in smoother flavor and greater potency.
Hash can be smoked in a pipe, joint, or bong, typically crumbled and mixed with flower or tobacco. It can also be vaporized at temperatures between 350 and 420 degrees Fahrenheit. Hash potency typically ranges from 20% to 60% THC depending on quality and production method. Full-melt hash, the highest grade, melts completely when heated with no residue. Hash offers a different flavor and effect profile than raw flower, often described as richer, more complex, and with a heavier body sensation due to the concentrated terpene and cannabinoid content.
