A highly potent cannabis extract produced by isolating cannabinoids and terpenes from plant material through various extraction methods.
Cannabis concentrates are products created by extracting and isolating cannabinoids and terpenes from plant material, resulting in a product with much higher potency than flower. Concentrates can range from 50% to 99% THC and come in many forms including wax, shatter, live resin, rosin, distillate, and diamonds.
Concentrates are made through solvent-based or solventless extraction. Solvent-based methods use chemicals like butane (BHO), propane, CO2, or ethanol to strip cannabinoids from the plant. The solvent is then purged, leaving behind a concentrated cannabinoid product. Solventless methods use mechanical means like heat and pressure (rosin), ice water agitation (bubble hash), or dry sifting to separate trichomes without chemicals. Each method produces concentrates with different textures, flavors, and purity levels.
Concentrates offer efficiency, potency, and flavor intensity that flower cannot match. However, they also carry a higher risk of overconsumption, especially for beginners. Start with a very small amount, roughly the size of a grain of rice, and wait before taking more. Quality concentrates should come with a certificate of analysis showing cannabinoid potency, terpene content, and passing results for residual solvents, pesticides, and heavy metals. Solventless options like rosin and bubble hash appeal to consumers who prefer a chemical-free extraction process.
