A soil-free cultivation method where cannabis plants grow in a nutrient solution, enabling precise control and fast growth.
Hydroponics is a soil-free cultivation method where cannabis plants grow with their roots in a nutrient-rich water solution or inert medium like rockwool, clay pebbles, or perlite. The grower provides all nutrients directly through the water, allowing precise control over what the plant receives at every stage of growth.
Several hydroponic approaches are used for cannabis. Deep Water Culture (DWC) suspends roots directly in aerated nutrient solution. Ebb and flow systems periodically flood a tray of growing medium with nutrient solution. Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) runs a thin stream of solution over the roots. Drip systems deliver nutrient solution through individual emitters to each plant. Each system has its strengths, with DWC being popular for its simplicity and rapid growth rates, while drip systems offer scalability for larger operations.
Hydroponic cannabis typically grows 20% to 30% faster than soil-grown plants and can produce larger yields. The precise nutrient control allows growers to optimize feeding at every growth stage, potentially producing more potent flower. Water usage is actually lower than soil growing because recirculating systems reuse the nutrient solution. The main trade-offs are higher initial setup costs, the need for more technical knowledge, and less margin for error, as problems like pH imbalances or equipment failures affect plants more quickly without soil's buffering capacity.
