A hydroponic system where cannabis roots are submerged in aerated, oxygenated nutrient solution for accelerated growth.
Deep Water Culture, commonly called DWC, is a hydroponic system where cannabis plants grow with their roots fully submerged in aerated, oxygenated nutrient solution. It is one of the simplest and most effective hydroponic methods, popular with both home growers and commercial operations for its fast growth rates and straightforward setup.
A basic DWC system consists of a light-proof bucket or reservoir filled with nutrient solution, a net pot holding the plant at the surface, and an air pump with air stones that continuously bubble oxygen through the water. The constant oxygenation is critical: roots submerged in stagnant water would drown and rot, but the air bubbles provide the oxygen needed for healthy root development. The nutrient solution is maintained at specific pH (5.5 to 6.5) and EC (electrical conductivity) levels and replaced or topped off regularly.
DWC is prized for explosive vegetative growth. With unlimited water access and constant oxygenation, roots expand rapidly, and plants can grow several inches per day during peak vegetative growth. The system is inexpensive to set up and easy to understand, making it a popular first hydroponic system. The main considerations are maintaining water temperature (65 to 72 degrees F to prevent root rot), monitoring pH and nutrients daily, and ensuring the air pump never fails, as root oxygenation is the foundation of the entire system.
