Cannabis seeds bred to produce only female plants, which are the ones that produce cannabinoid-rich flowers.
Feminized cannabis seeds are specifically bred to produce only female plants, eliminating the roughly 50% chance of growing male plants that comes with regular seeds. Since only female cannabis plants produce the cannabinoid-rich flowers that consumers want, feminized seeds have become the standard choice for most growers.
The most common feminization technique involves treating a female plant with colloidal silver or silver thiosulfate (STS), which causes it to produce male pollen sacs despite being genetically female. When this pollen fertilizes another female plant, the resulting seeds carry only female chromosomes (XX). Modern feminized seeds have a reliability rate above 99%, though occasional hermaphrodite plants can still appear, especially under stress conditions like light leaks or extreme temperatures.
For home growers, feminized seeds save significant time, space, and resources. Without feminized seeds, growers must plant extra seeds, wait several weeks to identify plant sex, and then remove males before they pollinate the females. Feminized seeds eliminate this uncertainty. They are available in both photoperiod and autoflowering varieties. While more expensive per seed than regular seeds, the guaranteed female plants make feminized seeds more cost-effective overall for most cultivation scenarios.
