The process of growing multiple seeds from the same strain genetics to identify and select the best-performing individual plant.
Pheno-hunting is the process of growing multiple seeds from the same strain and carefully evaluating each individual plant to select the best-performing phenotype. Since every seed carries a slightly different expression of its parent genetics, pheno-hunting allows growers and breeders to find exceptional individual plants that stand out from their siblings.
A typical pheno-hunt begins with germinating a large number of seeds, often 50 to 100 or more from a single cross. The grower raises all plants through the full lifecycle, tracking characteristics like growth vigor, branching structure, flowering time, bud density, aroma, trichome production, and cannabinoid content. After harvest, each phenotype is tested for potency and terpene profile and evaluated through test smoking or vaporizing. The top performers are then preserved by taking clones before the original plants are harvested.
Pheno-hunting is how the cannabis industry's most sought-after cuts originate. A single exceptional phenotype from a seed run can become a legendary clone-only strain grown by cultivators across the world. Gelato #41, Zkittlez, and many other popular strains were each selected from larger pheno-hunts where one plant outshone all others. For commercial cultivators, investing in pheno-hunting is essential for maintaining a competitive edge, as the difference between an average and an exceptional phenotype can be dramatic in terms of quality and consumer demand.
