Delta-8-THC, a less potent psychoactive cannabinoid isomer of delta-9 THC with a smoother, milder effect profile.
Delta-8-THC is a naturally occurring cannabinoid that is an isomer of the more common delta-9 THC. The two molecules are nearly identical, differing only in the position of a double bond on the carbon chain. Delta-8 produces psychoactive effects that users typically describe as milder, clearer, and less anxiety-inducing than delta-9 THC.
Delta-8 binds to CB1 receptors with lower affinity than delta-9, which accounts for its reduced potency, estimated at roughly 50% to 70% of delta-9's strength. Users commonly report a calmer, more functional high with less paranoia and mental fog. These properties have made delta-8 popular with consumers who find regular THC too intense or anxiety-provoking. The compound occurs naturally in cannabis at very low concentrations (less than 0.1%), so commercial delta-8 products are typically manufactured by chemically converting CBD extracted from hemp.
Delta-8 exists in a legal gray area. The 2018 US Farm Bill legalized hemp-derived cannabinoids, which some interpret as including delta-8 converted from hemp CBD. However, many states have moved to restrict or ban delta-8 sales. Safety concerns center on the chemical conversion process: poorly manufactured delta-8 products may contain residual solvents, unknown byproducts, or inaccurate potency labels. If you choose to use delta-8, prioritize products with comprehensive third-party lab testing that verifies both potency and purity.
