A clean cannabis extraction method using pressurized carbon dioxide as a solvent to produce high-quality oil.
CO2 extraction uses pressurized carbon dioxide as a solvent to remove cannabinoids and terpenes from cannabis plant material. It is considered one of the cleanest and most precise extraction methods available, widely used in the pharmaceutical, food, and cannabis industries.
In supercritical CO2 extraction, carbon dioxide is pressurized and heated past its critical point, where it behaves as both a liquid and a gas simultaneously. In this supercritical state, CO2 becomes an excellent solvent that can dissolve cannabinoids and terpenes from cannabis material. By adjusting temperature and pressure, extractors can selectively target specific compounds. After extraction, the pressure is released, CO2 returns to gas form and evaporates completely, leaving no residual solvent in the final product.
CO2 extraction produces clean, consistent products without the risk of residual chemical solvents. The tunability of the process allows extractors to create different products: full-spectrum oils rich in terpenes, refined distillates focused on specific cannabinoids, or anything in between. CO2 is non-toxic, non-flammable, and readily available. The main drawback is cost: supercritical CO2 extraction equipment is significantly more expensive than BHO or ethanol systems, which is reflected in the price of CO2-extracted products. For consumers prioritizing purity, CO2 extracts are an excellent choice.
