A retail store specializing in cannabis accessories, glassware, vaporizers, and related paraphernalia.
A head shop is a retail store specializing in cannabis accessories, smoking and vaporizing equipment, glassware, rolling papers, and related paraphernalia. The term originated in the 1960s counterculture, when these shops catered to the psychedelic and cannabis communities with pipes, papers, posters, and incense.
The first head shops emerged in the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco and other counterculture hubs in the mid-1960s. The name comes from head, 1960s slang for a person who uses psychedelics or cannabis. These shops were cultural gathering points as much as retail stores, selling underground newspapers, psychedelic art, and concert tickets alongside smoking accessories. The 1970s and 1980s saw head shops spread nationwide, though many operated in a legal gray area since paraphernalia laws varied by jurisdiction.
Today's head shops range from small, independent stores to large chain retailers. They carry a wide selection of glass pipes, bongs, vaporizers, dab rigs, grinders, rolling papers, and accessories. Many have expanded to include CBD products, kratom, and other legal botanicals. In states with legal cannabis, the line between head shops and dispensaries has blurred. Online head shops have also grown significantly. While the counterculture vibes of the original 1960s shops have faded, modern head shops continue to serve as hubs for cannabis accessory shopping and community.
