The act of smoking cannabis in a small, enclosed space to fill it with smoke for a more intense experience.
Hotboxing is the practice of smoking cannabis in a small, sealed space, such as a car, closet, tent, or small room, allowing smoke to fill the enclosed area. The dense cloud of smoke creates an immersive atmosphere and is believed by participants to intensify the experience through secondhand smoke inhalation.
The principle behind hotboxing is simple: by smoking in an enclosed space with no ventilation, the smoke has nowhere to escape and accumulates rapidly. After a short time, the entire space fills with a thick cloud of cannabis smoke. Occupants continue to inhale cannabinoid-rich air with every breath, even between active puffs. The reduced oxygen and elevated carbon dioxide levels in the enclosed space may also contribute to the lightheaded, intensified sensation that hotboxing produces.
Hotboxing occupies a nostalgic place in cannabis culture, frequently depicted in stoner films and comedy. Car hotboxing is particularly iconic, though it carries legal risks in many jurisdictions where consuming cannabis in a vehicle is prohibited. From a health perspective, hotboxing exposes occupants to large amounts of smoke and combustion byproducts in a concentrated environment. While it remains a popular social activity, many consumers have moved toward vaporizing or other lower-impact methods that offer intense experiences without the heavy smoke exposure.
