The large, iconic multi-pointed leaves of the cannabis plant that absorb light for photosynthesis.
Fan leaves are the large, iconic multi-pointed leaves of the cannabis plant that have become the universal symbol of cannabis culture. These leaves are the plant's primary photosynthetic organs, absorbing light energy to fuel growth. The classic cannabis leaf image recognized worldwide is a fan leaf.
Fan leaves serve as solar panels for the cannabis plant, capturing light energy through chlorophyll to power photosynthesis. They also regulate transpiration (water evaporation) and store nutrients that the plant can mobilize during heavy flowering. Fan leaves grow from the nodes of the main stem and branches, typically featuring five to thirteen pointed leaflets depending on the plant's genetics and maturity. Indica-dominant plants tend to have broader, wider fan leaves, while sativa-dominant genetics produce narrower, more slender leaflets.
Fan leaves contain minimal cannabinoids since they lack the dense trichome coverage found on flowers and sugar leaves. However, they are not entirely without value. Fresh fan leaves contain THCA, CBDA, and other raw cannabinoid acids that can be consumed through juicing. They also contain flavonoids and chlorophyll with potential nutritional benefits. Some people use fan leaves as wraps for Thai sticks or cannagars. In cultivation, the appearance and health of fan leaves provide important diagnostic information about nutrient deficiencies, pest problems, and overall plant vitality.
