Cannabidiolic acid, the raw acidic form of CBD present in fresh cannabis before decarboxylation.
Cannabidiolic acid is the raw, unheated form of CBD found in fresh cannabis and hemp plants. Like THCA is to THC, CBDA is the acidic precursor that converts to CBD through decarboxylation when exposed to heat or prolonged light. CBDA is the dominant cannabinoid in hemp cultivars bred for CBD production.
CBDA has been gaining scientific attention as more than just a stepping stone to CBD. Research suggests that CBDA may have its own distinct therapeutic potential. Studies have shown CBDA to be a potent activator of serotonin receptors (5-HT1A), which are involved in mood and nausea regulation. A GW Pharmaceuticals patent explored CBDA for treating nausea and vomiting, finding it effective at much lower doses than CBD. Additional preclinical research has investigated anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.
Raw cannabis juicing and cold-pressed hemp products are the primary ways consumers access CBDA. Some supplement companies now offer stabilized CBDA products that prevent conversion to CBD, preserving the acidic form. If you are interested in the potential benefits of raw cannabinoids, look for products specifically labeled as containing CBDA with supporting lab results. Fresh hemp smoothies and raw cannabis tinctures are becoming more common in wellness-oriented cannabis markets.
