A cannabis competition where strains and products are judged and awarded for quality, potency, and flavor.
The Cannabis Cup is a cannabis competition and expo where strains, concentrates, edibles, and other products are judged and awarded prizes for quality, potency, and flavor. The most famous is High Times Cannabis Cup, which began in Amsterdam in 1988 and has become the most prestigious event in the cannabis world.
High Times magazine founder Steven Hager created the first Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam, where cannabis coffee shops provided a legal venue for competition. Judges sampled entries from Dutch coffee shops and voted for their favorites. The event grew from a small gathering to a massive annual festival attracting thousands of visitors. As US legalization expanded, High Times launched Cannabis Cup events across legal states. Other competitions have also emerged, including the Emerald Cup (focused on sun-grown cannabis) and The Grow-Off.
Winning a Cannabis Cup is one of the highest honors a cannabis brand or grower can achieve. Cup wins drive consumer demand and can define a strain's reputation for years. Many legendary strains gained their fame through Cup victories. For the industry, these competitions set quality benchmarks and showcase innovation in growing, extraction, and product development. For consumers, Cup-winning strains and products represent peer-validated quality. The events themselves have evolved into cultural festivals with music, education, and community building alongside the competition.
