Knowing how to decarb hash and kief is the first step in making any hash-based edible — cannabutter, infused oil, tinctures, or infused syrup. Raw hash and kief contain THCA, not THC. Decarboxylating hash converts THCA to active THC by applying low, steady heat. Skip this step and your edibles will barely work. This guide covers the complete process Fordee uses, including how to handle decarb sticky hash and the correct hash decarb temperature and time.
Why You Need to Decarboxylate Hash for Edibles
You must decarboxylate hash for edibles because raw THCA does not produce psychoactive effects when eaten. Heat causes a chemical reaction that removes a carboxyl group from THCA, converting it to THC. Smoking or vaping does this instantly from the flame. For edibles, you do it in the oven first, before adding the hash to butter, oil, or any other infusion.
The same process applies when you want to decarb kief in oven — the method is identical. Kief and hash are both concentrated cannabis resin and decarb at the same temperature and time.
Equipment You Need
- Oven-safe baking dish (glass or ceramic — e.g., Pyrex)
- Aluminium foil (double-folded for better coverage)
- Parchment paper (highly recommended to prevent sticking — Fordee skipped this and regretted it)
- Fine grater or citrus zester (for dry hash only)
- Nitrile gloves (for handling sticky hash)
- Oven thermometer (optional but useful for accuracy)
- A clean glass jar with lid for storage
How to Decarb Hash and Kief in 3 Simple Steps
Step 1: Break Down the Hash
The goal is to maximize surface area so the hash decarboxylates evenly. If your hash is dry, use a fine grater or citrus zester to crumble it into small pieces directly over your parchment-lined baking dish. If you need to decarb sticky hash (fresh or moist), put on nitrile gloves and break it apart by hand into pea-sized pieces. Grating will not work on sticky hash — it clogs the grater and wastes product.
