The gravity bong hookah hack is exactly what it sounds like — transforming your glass globe gravity bong into a functional hookah/shisha pipe for a unique smoking experience at home. In this video I try this for the first time, figure out what works and what doesn’t, and land on 5 proven tips that make it actually work. Fair warning: if you’ve never smoked tobacco, don’t start. But if you enjoy the occasional hookah session, this gravity bong hookah hack is surprisingly effective and very affordable.
What is the Gravity Bong Hookah Hack?
The gravity bong hookah hack turns your OEM-style gravity bong (the globe style with two chambers) into a makeshift shisha pipe. Instead of loading herb into the bowl, you fit it with a hookah tobacco bowl, place a lit charcoal on top, and use the gravity bong mechanism to pull thick shisha smoke through the water filtration. The result? A filtered, flavorful hookah session at a fraction of the cost of a full hookah setup — using gear you already own.
A note on terminology: hookah and shisha refer to the same thing — it depends where you’re from. In the US it’s called hookah; in Spain (and much of Europe) it’s called shisha. The tobacco itself is also referred to as shisha. For this guide I’ll use both interchangeably.
5 Proven Tips for Your Gravity Bong Hookah Hack
1. Modify the Percolator Configuration First
Before loading anything, change the percolator setup. Swap out the double-percolator configuration for a single percolator on one side and a straight tube on the other. This reduces over-filtration and lets more smoke through. If you want maximum smoke production, remove the percolator from both sides entirely — though you lose some filtration that way.
2. Use Quick-Light Charcoal and Light it Properly
Quick-light charcoal (self-igniting tablets with an accelerant) are the easiest to use at home — hold them with tongs, ignite with a lighter, and blow on them until fully lit. Do this near an open window — the initial fumes from the accelerant are unpleasant. Don’t rush it: a partially lit coal produces less heat, less smoke, and a worse experience. Wait until the entire tablet glows red before placing it on the bowl.
