A tracking system that monitors cannabis from cultivation through sale to ensure regulatory compliance.
Seed-to-sale refers to comprehensive tracking systems that monitor every cannabis plant and product from the moment a seed is planted (or a clone is taken) through its final sale to a consumer. These systems are a cornerstone of cannabis regulation, ensuring accountability, preventing diversion to the illicit market, and maintaining product safety standards.
Licensed cannabis businesses use specialized software platforms (like Metrc, BioTrack, or Leaf Data Systems) to record every stage of a cannabis product's lifecycle: planting, vegetative growth, flowering, harvest, drying, trimming, lab testing, packaging, transportation, and final sale. Each plant receives a unique identification tag (often an RFID tag) at the start of cultivation. Every transfer of product between licensees, every lab test result, and every retail transaction is logged in the system. Regulators access this data to monitor compliance and investigate discrepancies.
Seed-to-sale tracking gives consumers confidence that the products they purchase have been grown, tested, and handled within the regulated system. If a product recall is needed due to contamination, the tracking system enables rapid identification of affected batches. The data also helps regulators identify and shut down operations that attempt to divert product to the illicit market. While the systems add compliance costs to cannabis businesses, they are fundamental to maintaining public trust in the legal cannabis market.
