How to Clean and Maintain Your Dab Rig

A clean dab rig is not just for looks. Residue buildup wrecks flavour, restricts airflow, and turns your dirty water into a science experiment. The good news: keeping a rig clean is dead simple if you build the right habits. Here is everything you need to know.

Why Cleaning Matters

Flavour. Residue from previous dabs creates a stale taste that muddles the terpenes of whatever you are dabbing now. Clean glass lets you actually taste your concentrate.

Airflow. Buildup in the percolator or downstem makes hits harder to pull and less smooth.

Hygiene. Standing water in a dirty rig breeds bacteria and mould. If you can smell the water, it was overdue yesterday.

Longevity. Regular cleaning prevents the hard-to-remove buildup that permanently stains glass or chazes a quartz banger.

After Every Dab: The Swab Habit

This is the single most impactful habit you can build. After each dab, while the banger is still warm but not hot:

Use a dry cotton swab to mop up any oil left on the banger floor and walls.

Follow with a swab dipped in iso to clear anything the dry swab missed.

If you use a carb cap, wipe the contact surface too.

Ten seconds, and it prevents the carbon buildup that causes chazzing. A banger maintained this way can stay crystal clear for months.

Weekly Deep Clean: The Rig

What You Need

Isopropyl alcohol (91% or higher)

Coarse salt (table salt or rock salt)

Zip-lock bags for smaller pieces

Warm water for rinsing

Pipe cleaners or cotton swabs for tight spots

Steps

Empty and rinse the rig with warm water to clear loose debris.

Pull the banger and any accessories. Clean those separately.

Pour iso into the rig through the mouthpiece. Add a tablespoon of coarse salt. The salt is your abrasive.

Cover the openings with your hands, plastic wrap, or silicone caps. Shake hard for 1 to 2 minutes.

Let it soak for 15 to 30 minutes if there is stubborn buildup.

Rinse thoroughly with warm water. Repeat if needed.

Dry completely before your next session, otherwise you'll be inhaling iso fumes.

Cleaning the Banger

For routine maintenance, the after-dab swab is usually enough. For deeper cleaning:

Soak the banger in iso for 30 minutes to an hour.

Scrub any remaining residue with a cotton swab.

For stubborn spots, heat the banger gently with a torch to loosen the deposits, then swab while warm.

Never torch a banger red-hot to burn off residue. That degrades the quartz and causes permanent clouding, also known as devitrification, also known as ruining your banger.

Water: Change It Every Session

Fresh water every session. Simple habit, big difference. Old water absorbs terpenes and develops an off taste, and turns into a bacterial breeding ground. If you can see particles floating or the water has changed colour, it was overdue yesterday.

Some people add ice or use chilled water for cooler hits. Personal preference, doesn't affect how often you change it.

Common Mistakes

Torching the banger clean. Red-hot destroys the quartz surface over time. Iso and swabs always win.

Using harsh chemicals. Skip the acetone, bleach, and commercial glass cleaners. Iso is all you need.

Ignoring the downstem. The joint where the banger meets the rig collects reclaim. A pipe cleaner soaked in iso handles it in seconds.

Cleaning while glass is hot. Let it cool before applying cold alcohol. Thermal shock will crack thinner glass.
