Greening Out
Overconsumption of cannabis leading to anxiety, nausea, dizziness, and discomfort, sometimes called a green out.
Greening out refers to the unpleasant experience of consuming too much cannabis, resulting in symptoms that can include severe nausea, dizziness, sweating, pallor, anxiety, paranoia, rapid heartbeat, and sometimes vomiting. The term comes from the green pallor that often accompanies the nausea, similar to the expression looking green.
What Happens During a Green Out
A green out occurs when the endocannabinoid system becomes overwhelmed by excessive THC. The symptoms are the body's stress response to overstimulation of CB1 receptors. Blood pressure may drop (orthostatic hypotension), causing dizziness and lightheadedness especially when standing. The anxiety center of the brain (amygdala) becomes hyperactive, producing fear and paranoia. Nausea results from cannabinoid effects on the gut and brain stem. While extremely uncomfortable, greening out is not medically dangerous and has never been fatal.
How to Recover
Find a calm, comfortable space and lie down. Focus on slow, deep breathing. Drink water or juice. Chew black peppercorns (the caryophyllene may help). If available, take CBD, which can moderate THC's effects. A cold cloth on the forehead can help with nausea and overheating. Remind yourself (or the affected person) that this is temporary and will pass, typically within 30 minutes to a few hours. Prevention is the best approach: start low, go slow, and avoid combining cannabis with alcohol, which significantly increases the risk of greening out.
