A wake and bake Barcelona beach session sounds perfect in theory — sunrise, salty air, a kayak, and a joint. In practice, things don’t always go to plan. Fordee woke up at 5:00 AM, loaded up a city Bicing bike with an inflatable kayak, rode down to the beach, and discovered that his kayak pump was broken. So he did the only reasonable thing: deflated the kayak, walked to the end of a jetty, and smoked a joint watching the sunrise instead. Still a win.
Wake and Bake Barcelona Beach: The Setup
One of the underrated perks of living in Barcelona is the Bicing city bike system. For around 50 euros a year, you get unlimited 30-minute trips — pick up a bike anywhere in the city, ride it to your destination, and drop it at the next station. For a wake and bake Barcelona beach run, it’s the perfect vehicle. Fordee strapped the inflatable kayak to the bike and headed down to the water before dawn.
The Great Kayak Pump Fail
This wasn’t even the first attempt. A few days earlier, Fordee showed up with the wrong pump — a paddleboard pump, which isn’t compatible with the kayak valve. This time, the right pump was in hand. The bottom of the kayak inflated fine. Then, when inflating one of the side chambers, the pump broke mid-inflation. No amount of fiddling could fix it. The kayak got deflated, packed up, and the water plan was officially scrapped.
5 Reasons a Wake and Bake Barcelona Beach Sunrise Is Worth It Anyway
1. The Sunrise Is Unreal
Barcelona’s beaches face east, which means the sun rises directly over the Mediterranean. Whether you’re in a kayak or standing on a jetty, the light show is worth the early alarm.
2. The Beach Is Empty
At 5:00 AM, the beach is yours. No tourists, no crowds, just you, the waves, and whatever you’ve got rolled up. For a wake and bake Barcelona beach session, the early morning is the sweet spot.
