A free puff peak — sounds too good to be true, right? Turns out it isn’t. I scored a working PuffCo Peak for absolutely nothing after helping a friend move and then tracking down a spare atomizer. In this post, I’ll walk you through exactly how it happened, how to set one up properly, and give you my honest take on the device after using it.
How I Scored a Free Puff Peak
The story of my free puff peak started with a favour. I helped a friend move apartments, and at the end of the day he handed me his PuffCo Peak and said it was mine — the only catch was a busted atomizer. Instead of buying one, I reached out to my network and found another friend with a spare atomizer he was happy to give away. Two days later I had a fully functional free puff peak and no excuse not to review it.
I’ll admit I’m late to the PuffCo party — this device has been around for years. But sometimes the best reviews come from people who weren’t chasing hype, just trying out the gear.
Free Puff Peak Setup: 5 Essential First Steps
1. Fully Charge Before First Use
The very first thing to do with any free puff peak (or newly acquired one) is plug it in and charge it completely. Starting with a full battery ensures the device works at peak performance from the jump.
2. Run a Burn-Off Cycle
Before your first real session, do a burn-off: set the device to its highest power mode (White / 600°F) and run it empty for 5 minutes — once or twice. This burns off any factory oils, packaging dust, and shipping residue. It’s especially important if you’ve installed a new atomizer, as Fordee did with this free puff peak.
3. Fill the Glass Correctly
Add water just past the two front holes in the glass. Don’t shake it — if water sloshes into the back hole it can reach the atomizer and damage it. When seating the glass, align the back hole with the corresponding hole on the body and press down gently until it clicks into place.
4. Load Rosin Into the Ceramic Cup
The atomizer has a ceramic cup that sits on top of the heating element. The element only heats from the bottom — so drop your rosin or concentrate into the center of the cup, not wiped on the sides. The cup is replaceable when it wears out.
5. Choose Your Temperature Mode Before Heating
Set your temperature before pressing the button to start the heat cycle. Press the button once to cycle through the four modes. Once your temp is selected, double-press to start heating. The device vibrates when it reaches temperature — you have about 20 seconds to take your hit.
PuffCo Peak Temperature Settings
One limitation of the free puff peak (and PuffCo Peak in general) compared to the Peak Pro is that you only get four preset temperatures — no custom dialing:
- Blue — 450°F: Low temp, best for flavor, lightest vapor
- Green — 500°F: Medium-low, good balance of flavor and vapor
- Red — 550°F: Medium-high, solid clouds, slightly less flavor
- White — 600°F: High temp, maximum vapor production
For rosin and live resin, starting on Green (500°F) or Red (550°F) is a solid choice. Blue works great for terp-heavy extracts when you want to taste every note.
Honest Pros and Cons of the Free Puff Peak
What I Like
- Hits great: The PuffCo Peak delivers satisfying, smooth dabs — the water filtration and vapor path are genuinely well-designed.
- Build quality feels premium: The body has a solid, quality feel in hand with what seems to be hard plastic and a firm rubber base.
- Easy to use: Three-second hold to turn on, double-press to heat, vibrates when ready. The learning curve is minimal.
- Session mode available: Double-press again after a hit to keep the atomizer hot for back-to-back rips.
What Could Be Better
- No exact temperature control: Four presets only. If you want to dial in 475°F or 525°F, you’re out of luck on the standard Peak (the Peak Pro fixes this).
- Atomizers reportedly burn out frequently: Replacements run about $50 each — that adds up fast. This is the most common complaint about the free puff peak generation.
- The glass feels thin: For a premium-priced device, the included glass feels a little delicate. Handle it carefully.
