Rosin is a solventless cannabis concentrate made by applying heat and pressure to cannabis flower, hash, or kief to squeeze out the resinous sap. Unlike BHO or CO2 extracts, rosin production uses no chemical solvents at all, making it one of the cleanest concentrate options available.
Production Process
The basic rosin process is remarkably simple: cannabis material is placed between two heated plates, and pressure is applied to force the trichome resin out of the plant material. Commercial rosin presses use hydraulic pressure and precise temperature control, while home producers can even use a hair straightener for small-scale production. Temperatures typically range from 160 to 220 degrees Fahrenheit, with lower temperatures preserving more terpenes and higher temperatures increasing yield at the expense of flavor. The resulting product ranges from sappy and translucent to waxy and opaque.

Rosin's appeal lies in its purity and simplicity. Because no solvents are involved, there is zero risk of residual solvent contamination. The product retains the full terpene and cannabinoid profile of the source material, offering rich flavor and a complete entourage effect. Live rosin, made from fresh-frozen cannabis that has been processed into bubble hash before pressing, represents the premium tier of solventless concentrates. The trade-off is price: rosin and live rosin typically cost more than solvent-based alternatives due to lower yields and more labor-intensive production.
