Thai stick is a traditional cannabis preparation originating in Thailand where potent cannabis buds are tied tightly around a bamboo stick or hemp stalk, creating a cigar-like product. Thai sticks were legendary imports in the 1960s and 1970s and are considered one of the earliest cannabis concentrate preparations.
History
Thai sticks arrived in the United States during the Vietnam War era, brought back by soldiers and travelers. They consisted of premium Thai sativa buds wrapped around a stick, bound with hemp fiber, and sometimes coated with opium or hash oil (though many were pure cannabis). The tightly compressed, slow-burning sticks delivered an exceptionally potent, long-lasting sativa experience that was unlike anything available domestically at the time. Thai sticks became legendary and commanded premium prices throughout the 1970s.
Modern Revival
The original Thai stick trade largely disappeared by the 1980s, but the concept has been revived by modern craft cannabis producers. Contemporary Thai sticks (sometimes called cannagars) use premium flower pressed around a skewer, often infused with concentrate and wrapped in fan leaves. These modern versions can cost $50 to $500 or more depending on the materials used. They burn for hours and are considered a luxury cannabis experience. The Thai stick represents a bridge between ancient cannabis preparation traditions and modern craft production.
