Fresh frozen is a cannabis preservation method where plants or trimmed material are immediately frozen after harvest rather than being hung to dry and cure. The primary purpose is to lock in the volatile terpene profile of the living plant for use in live resin, live rosin, and other premium concentrate production.
The Process
Immediately after cutting, cannabis plants or individual branches are placed into large freezer bags or bins and flash-frozen, ideally within minutes of harvest. Commercial operations use industrial freezers reaching negative 10 to negative 40 degrees Fahrenheit. The quick freeze preserves monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes that would otherwise evaporate during the two-week drying and curing process. Fresh frozen material is stored at consistently freezing temperatures until it is ready for extraction.
Why Fresh Frozen Matters
Cannabis can lose 30% to 60% of its terpene content during traditional drying and curing. Fresh freezing preserves compounds that contribute to the truest representation of a strain's living aroma and flavor. This is why live resin and live rosin, both made from fresh-frozen material, are considered premium products with superior terpene profiles. The trade-off is that fresh-frozen material cannot be smoked or vaporized as flower; it must be processed into concentrates. It also requires dedicated cold storage, adding logistical costs to production.
