Cannabigerol, or CBG, is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid often called the mother of all cannabinoids because its acidic form, CBGA, is the chemical precursor from which other cannabinoids are synthesized. As the cannabis plant matures, enzymes convert CBGA into THCA, CBDA, and CBCA, which is why mature cannabis typically contains very low levels of CBG, usually less than 1%.
Emerging Research
CBG has generated significant scientific interest in recent years. Preclinical studies have investigated its potential anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and neuroprotective properties. A 2015 study in the journal Neurotherapeutics found that CBG showed promise in a mouse model of Huntington's disease. Other research has explored CBG's ability to reduce intraocular pressure (relevant to glaucoma) and inhibit the growth of certain cancer cells in vitro. These findings are preliminary but encouraging.
CBG Products
Breeders have developed high-CBG hemp cultivars that are harvested early in the flowering cycle to capture CBG before it converts to other cannabinoids. This has made CBG oils, capsules, and flower more widely available. CBG is commonly combined with CBD in wellness products. Consumers report using CBG for focus, mild mood support, and digestive comfort, though individual results vary. As with any cannabinoid supplement, look for third-party lab testing to verify content and purity.
